Cheesy, Dramatics, and Ooze
(7.5/10)
Watching this 90’s movie brings back our childhood memories and desires of wanting to be a Martial-arts-using Power Ranger. Seeing the Rangers that we know and love from the show put us back in a state of childhood bliss. When we sat down for this film, though we had seen it before, we watched with the same anticipation and excitement we had when we first saw it. We reviewed it knowing all that we do about the original series, and looked at it both as we would have as kids and as adults to see if the movie holds up to time.
That being said, we didn’t really feel like there was anything new presented in this movie. It was like a two parter episode crunched into an hour and a half long movie. We remember thinking this even as children. Like most of the movies we review here at Geekedia, there is a certain suspension of disbelief required to accept the outrageous things that happen in the universe. It’s often times ridiculous and there are some plot points don’t fully make sense, but it’s classic Power Rangers and we don’t care. Power Rangers was always outrageous and we loved it back then and we still do now.
Because this is a 90’s movie, to mention the poor graphics would be almost cruel. When it was made, those graphics were cutting edge! Yes, by today’s standards the graphics and visual effects suck, but we’re not going to take points off for this. One of the things we did take off points for was the fact that we got new, never before seen weapons that we never see again in the show. This continuity error bothers us now more so than it did when we were kids, but it is a noticeable one. It seems like the writers of the movie and TV show just didn’t work together on this, nor did they take into account of matching the new weapons to the individual Ranger’s dinosaurs. That’s something that really bothered us. All of the weapons in the show made sense: the sword for the t-rex, the bow and arrow for the pterodactyl, the daggers for the sabertooth tiger, the staff for the triceratops, and the ax for the mastadon. The new weapons they gave, only some of the rangers, did not really fit their dinosaurs. One of the positives of the movie was the fact that they used the film to, pretty much, explain the new powers the Rangers get in the third season. That was definitely smart on their end.
This movie, like the title we gave this review, is cheesy, full of overdramatics, and most importantly…. full of ooze. It brings back great memories, it’s full of nostalgia, and keeps our inner child entertained for an hour and a half. This is a great movie to watch and rewatch with your friends, every few years, or once you’ve forgotten the plot entirely…. Or run out of other movies to watch…. We’re really big fans of the Power Rangers series and love this movie that adds to the lore of the universe. We had tons of fun watching it again just to make fun of it’s cheesy-90’s-goodness, and we know you will too!
