“Billy is my Spirit Animal”
(9/10)
There are so many reboots happening these days and not all of them hit the bullseye like this Power Rangers reboot. If you can’t tell, here at Geekedia, we love Power Rangers! It holds a special place in our heart and this movie is a huge part of why we started Geekedia Reviews in the first place. We were so excited when we found out they were redoing the origin story in the film. Overall, we really like what what they decided to do with one of our favorite childhood memories. There were only a few things that we didn't like.
Like we said we were very happy that they were redoing the origin story, but we were also very relieved. They gave us the Power Rangers we love but with a new twist. They modernized the story to accommodate the old and the new generations of fans. In some of the first scenes, you get a very Breakfast Club vibe. We see almost all of them in detention and right away we get the sense that all of them are rebels, outcasts, and loners; that all of them might need some sort of power to help them grow as people. Luckily for them this was a Power Rangers movie. We loved that after they got their powers they didn't immediately know how to use them. That allowed for more growth, and the fact that they needed to bond so they could morph provided a decent plot device. We love the choices of actors for each individual character. They brought a sense of realism to their characters and story. The only thing we didn't care for was over abundance of Krispy Kreme. We know it was smart product placement, we just didn't need it shoved down or throats.
There are a lot of differences and similarities between this movie and the original show. The movie kept all five original Rangers, Rita Repulsa, Alpha 5, Zordon, and Goldar, and they just updated their looks. The upgrade we were most satisfied with was the updated look of the Rangers. They made the suits have a more alien tech feel and they look like a real suit of armor. They gave Zordon and Rita more of a backstory to explain some of their motivations in this film. We liked that they chose to change these characters in this way because it gave more depth to the history, lore, and story they were trying to tell. For Goldar, unfortunately, we didn't think the new design added anything of value to the film. The training montage, however, did. It showed the Rangers’ struggle with their new powers and added an extra dose of comedy. Again and again, we see them not being able to use their full powers, and it shows their amd Zordon's frustration at not reaching their full potential.
This movie was so much fun for us to watch. We’ve seen it multiple times and every time we watch we get the same excited, childlike bliss when they finally morph for the first time, when they play the original theme as they fight, and especially when they form the Megazord. The anticipation is built up so much throughout the film that long-time fans, like us, can’t help but be absolutely giddy when it finally happens in the movie. We can’t wait to see what future Power Rangers movies have in store. Will the Green Ranger show up? Will we see Rita Repulsa and Goldar again? Or maybe we’ll even get to see Lord Zedd?!?! We won’t know for sure until the next one comes up but whatever it is, we know we want more of what Power Rangers has to offer.
